Many of you are scratching your head in confusion...you are asking yourself, "Isn't a boss the same as a #leader??" Many people see the two terms as interchangeable, but in short no, they are two completely different entities. If you have ever worked under a superior, you know that they can either make your work life MISERABLE or absolutely AMAZING!
Boss vs. Leader
Qualities
Depends on authority vs. Depends on good will
Drives employees vs. Coaches employees
Uses people vs. Develops people
Says "I" vs. Say "We"
Inspires a fearful environment vs. Generates exuberance
Commands vs. Asks
Talks more than they listen vs. Listens more than they talk
Criticizes vs. Encourages
I can positively say that the teams that produce higher and have the most long lasting relationships with their companies are those that are being led by a "leader" and not a "boss." So, how do you go from boss to leader??
Guide your employees, don't control them or micro-manage them
Show appreciation
Encourage & Motivate
Give credit, when credit is due--don't do this behind closed doors. Celebrate with your team
Lead by example--show your team that you align with the company's mission, vision, & values and they should too
Keep your ego in check
Delegate effectively
Be adaptable
Understand & Acknowledge that your team is comprised of individual, personalities, talents, and so much more. Every individual is unique.
Play off of your team's strengths
