Many of you are scratching your head in confusion...you are asking yourself, "Isn't a boss the same as a #leader??" Many people see the two terms as interchangeable, but in short no, they are two completely different entities. If you have ever worked under a superior, you know that they can either make your work life MISERABLE or absolutely AMAZING!

Boss vs. Leader

Qualities

  • Depends on authority vs. Depends on good will

  • Drives employees vs. Coaches employees

  • Uses people vs. Develops people

  • Says "I" vs. Say "We"

  • Inspires a fearful environment vs. Generates exuberance

  • Commands vs. Asks

  • Talks more than they listen vs. Listens more than they talk

  • Criticizes vs. Encourages

I can positively say that the teams that produce higher and have the most long lasting relationships with their companies are those that are being led by a "leader" and not a "boss." So, how do you go from boss to leader??

  1. Guide your employees, don't control them or micro-manage them

  2. Show appreciation

  3. Encourage & Motivate

  4. Give credit, when credit is due--don't do this behind closed doors. Celebrate with your team

  5. Lead by example--show your team that you align with the company's mission, vision, & values and they should too

  6. Keep your ego in check

  7. Delegate effectively

  8. Be adaptable

  9. Understand & Acknowledge that your team is comprised of individual, personalities, talents, and so much more. Every individual is unique.

  10. Play off of your team's strengths
